World Challenge for parents and guardians

Everything you need to say ‘Yes’ with confidence

Most parents or guardians arrive here with a letter or email from their child’s school and a decision to make. They usually have questions about World Challenge and what an expedition involves. Here’s the short version.

An overseas World Challenge school expedition is designed around personal development, with challenge and responsibility built into the experience. Young people come home more confident, independent and with a stronger sense of what they’re capable of. They come back with friendships and stories that stay with them too.

Below, you’ll find what a World Challenge expedition asks of your child, how we look after them and where to get your questions answered.

What to expect

Your child will be trusted with more than you might expect

Young people take turns holding real roles on a World Challenge expedition. They’re encouraged to manage the day’s budget, plan and cook their team’s meals, and lead the group for a day. They travel with their school group and their teacher, with a trained and experienced Expedition Leader alongside them.

It asks a lot of a teenager. That’s deliberate, and it’s why they’re still talking about it years later. It also gives young people real experiences they can talk about later, in college or university applications, job interviews and at work.

“As a graduate recruiter, I look for candidates who have gone above and beyond academic and sporting achievements, those who have dealt with real people, taken on responsibility or had experiences that make them stand out. From every angle, as a pupil, a leader and now an employer, I can say that a World Challenge Expedition genuinely sets young people apart from the crowd.”

Safety and support

40 years of expedition experience behind every trip

Our safety and operational systems have been built and refined over decades of running school expeditions worldwide. Every expedition is designed to meet BS 8848, the British Standard for organised ventures outside the UK, as well as our own established procedures.

Your child’s Expedition Leader is experienced in adventurous activities, as well as teaching, youth work or outdoor education. They’re also trained in health, wellbeing and emergency response. UK-based leaders hold an enhanced DBS check, and the few based overseas have equivalent checks from their own country.

Your child’s teacher travels with the group too, and we support them throughout. Both are backed by support teams on the ground who live and work in our destinations.

With your child every step of the way

Every team carries an inReach satellite tracker, and more than one way to get in touch, so our 24/7 Operations Centre can check in at key stages and reach them where there’s no mobile signal.

Healix, our medical partner, gives Expedition Leaders access to doctors and nurses by phone at any hour. Our Operations team also monitors weather, government and private security advice, working with Expedition Leaders and local support teams to adapt plans where needed. And if something significant happens that you need to know about, we’ll contact you.

From the first conversation to the day they return

Your school has a named contact from day one. Most schools hold parents’ and students’ evenings with us, followed by a training day where your child meets their Expedition Leader. They then work through preparation modules together as a team before departure. Your child’s teacher travels with them, and we support them throughout.

Your child gets a kit list well in advance, along with visa guidance and links to up-to-date vaccination and travel health advice. Every team carries a fully stocked expedition medical kit.

Schools consistently rate World Challenge highly on preparation. Many of our team have run expeditions for decades, and most have been on one themselves. These are trips we’d send our own children on, so we know the questions you’ll have before you wave yours off.

“From the initial introduction with World Challenge right through to the expedition itself, World Challenge have been professional, well organised and made the whole process of planning very easy. Our son had an amazing experience on this trip and over the summer it’s been clear that this was very much more than just a holiday. He’s developed so many new skills and had an amazing experience that will stay with him for many years.”

“I just wanted to say what a brilliant time my daughter had on World Challenge in Malaysia… She finds sporting and academic issues so difficult and has dealt with anxiety and low confidence as a result. Despite none of her friends going on the trip and several wobbles, she went on the trip and we have never seen her so confident since her return with a different outlook on life and what she can achieve.
We especially wanted to thank her Expedition Leader who was really fabulous with her and all the Malaysian team who she said really encouraged her throughout the trip… I think lots of young people and lots of parents might be put off the trip due to their children’s challenges. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is without doubt the best thing we have ever supported our daughter to do.”

“From start to finish, this trip was organised immaculately, and I must congratulate you for that; my daughter also had the most amazing time while there, and as we expected, has come back a different person. I was a little worried about the trip as a whole to be honest, but I needn’t have been!”

Mike, parent, Trinity Sixth Form Academy, Morocco expedition

“I just wanted to email to say what a brilliant experience my son had on the recent trip to Morocco with Lutterworth College and World Challenge. From the minute he put his name down we have received all the information needed and he has been supported throughout. Big shout out to his Expedition Leader and all his team that made the trip a huge success.”

Julie, parent, Lutterworth College, Morocco expedition

“My daughter is just back from her Borneo trip and I just wanted to email to say she had the most amazing experience… She enjoyed every part of being away and it truly was a trip of a lifetime. Thank you for looking after her and providing memories that will last a lifetime.”

Christine, parent, Grove Academy, Borneo expedition

‘Our daughter’s experience was one of the best life experiences she has ever had, and she is grateful for the opportunity. She has also mentioned to us how the leadership team have been great with her and she is very grateful (and we are grateful). Thank you so much for taking care of our girl and the others throughout the trip.’

Parents, Bishop Hatfield Girls’ School, Cambodia expedition

‘My son had an amazing time, while challenging at times. It will be some time til he really comprehends what he’s experienced and will share his adventure in years to come. Also wanted to thank his Expedition Leader for keeping our children safe, ensuring they push themselves, overcoming challenges as individuals and as a group, and making sure everyone is always ok… Keep these experiences going; they are vital for our children, their outlook on the world, self-confidence and resilience.’

What your child comes back with

Development you can hear, not just hear about.

Confidence in unfamiliar situations, teamwork, responsibility and perspective. Most young people come home from a World Challenge Expedition able to explain what they did and what it taught them. That gives them something real to draw from in applications, interviews and whatever challenges come next.

Young people, teachers and parents often tell us they can see a lasting difference. After every expedition, we invite students and schools to share their experience, and we publish the results. So this isn’t something we’re asking you to take on trust. There are stats and evidence behind it.

“I’ve proved to myself that I can handle anything in any situation, and the World Challenge experience made that possible.”

Payments and fundraising

In the UK, World Challenge Expeditions are usually paid for in instalments, although some schools prefer to pay the balance in full, with a deposit to secure your child’s place.

UK schools either collect payments from you and pay World Challenge themselves, or some will ask you to pay us directly. International schools collect payments from parents themselves. Your school will let you know how it works for your expedition. Payments on bookings sold in the UK are ATOL protected.

Many students also raise some or all of the cost themselves. For some schools, fundraising is deliberately built into the programme. Setting a target and working towards it helps your child build independence, initiative and ownership of their expedition before they’ve even left. Fundraising can be part of the experience whichever way your school handles payments.

OUR ACCREDITATIONS

Peace of mind for schools and parents.

We hold all of these accreditations. For schools, the Department of Education (DFE) recommends using a travel provider with the Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) Quality Badge, and holding it means less risk assessment paperwork for you. For parents, the ABTA and ATOL logos mean every payment is protected.
