World Challenge Expeditions

Expeditions

Global School Expeditions, student-led since 1987.

International school trips lasting from a week to a month in more than 20 countries across five continents. They challenge students to step outside their comfort zone, take real responsibility and discover what they’re capable of. Students take the lead, with a trained Expedition Leader alongside them.

What is a World Challenge Expedition?

The school expedition World Challenge was built on, and the one schools keep coming back to

Every World Challenge school expedition is designed so students take responsibility, work as a team and make decisions. They do it in a place that pushes them out of their comfort zone, with a trained Expedition Leader travelling alongside them.

World Challenge pioneered this in the UK 40 years ago, and we were one of the first in the world to run a school trip this way.

  • 7 to 27 nights, worldwide
  • Student-led: students make real decisions
  • Trained Expedition Leaders with every group
  • 24/7 Operations Centre and support team behind each expedition

You travel with them as a teacher, not a tour manager.

What do students do on a world Challenge Expedition?

Preparation starts months before departure. Students raise money for their own place, learn the skills the trip will ask of them, and train with their teacher and Expedition Leader, so the group that lands has already learned to work as one.

On the ground, most expeditions move through a trek phase, a project alongside a community or conservation partner and time to explore. The days that ask most of them are usually the ones they talk about afterwards.

That’s what our expeditions look like for a student. If you want to know how one comes together from the school side, we’ve set that out separately.

Students will:

  • Develop resilience and independence through real-world challenges
  • Gain cultural awareness and empathy by working with local communities
  • Understand sustainability and global citizenship in action
  • Lead: every student leads, not just the confident ones
  • Be given real responsibility, not simulated

Who is a World Challenge expedition for?

Expeditions are designed for secondary school groups that are ready to take on a greater challenge, independence and responsibility. Expeditions happen in challenging environments, and that’s deliberate so that young people have to lead and take real responsibility for each other. Students carry their kit, live more simply and go without some of the comforts they’re used to.

After an expedition, young people come home more confident, more independent and with a stronger sense of what they’re capable of. So while students are encouraged to step up, schools are supported every step of the way.

Where our expeditions go

What do students gain from a world challenge expedition?

Our expeditions develop capabilities that are relevant across UK and international education, including the International Baccalaureate. They also support the personal development and enrichment outcomes many schools are already working towards.

Students come back able to explain not just what they did, but what they learned about themselves. Those are experiences they can draw on in personal statements, interviews and applications – for college, university and working life.

Plan your school expedition

Plan your expedition with people who know schools

Tell us about your group, your aims and what you want students to come back capable of doing. World Challenge will build your school expedition around that and handle the parts that would otherwise land on your desk, such as:

  • A named contact and support from day one
  • Destinations chosen for what they ask of students
  • We present the trip to students and parents
  • Clear information to support school approval

Everything you need, clearly laid out

For teachers, most of the admin that usually lands on your desk sits with us instead, from first enquiry to final debrief:

  • Flights, logistics and itineraries
  • Student details and paperwork
  • Risk management documentation
  • Parent payments handled for you (UK only)

Support you can rely on, wherever you are

For 40 years, World Challenge has supported schools on expeditions worldwide, whatever the time difference. Our support includes:

  • Trained Expedition Leaders
  • 24/7 Operations Centre
  • Support teams on the ground
  • Expert medical advice when needed

Our World Challenge expedition to Morocco was genuinely one of the most rewarding school trips I’ve been part of. Seeing our students grow in confidence, independence and resilience as the expedition unfolded was incredibly special. From finding our way through Marrakech and working alongside a local community, to challenging ourselves in the Atlas Mountains, we shared experiences and created memories that I know will stay with us for years. World Challenge gave our students the opportunity to discover what they’re capable of. A huge thank you to everyone at World Challenge and in particular Jess, our Expedition Leader!

Teacher, Saint Felix School, Morocco school expedition

The World Challenge model offered our pupils an exceptional experience. The planning of the trip is handled by experts, the communication with our parents has been regular and informative, and the organisation has been seamless. Our pupils have been suitably challenged in unique and inspiring locations, and unlike other school trips, the pupils are all expected to take on leadership roles throughout the trip. Would highly recommend.
