What you need to know about Finland
Finnish culture is shaped by nature, quiet confidence and a love of the outdoors. Everyman’s right (jokamiehenoikeus) means everyone is free to roam the forests, pick berries and enjoy the countryside, as long as they respect nature. Sauna is a way of life, and sisu, the Finnish spirit of grit and determination, runs through everything.
Oulanka National Park is Finland at its wildest. Trek part of the famous Bear Trail through ancient forest, cross rushing rapids on suspension bridges and stand beside the thundering Kiutaköngäs rapids. Then swap boots for paddles to canoe the Oulankajoki River, before white water rafting on the Kitka River.
Back at basecamp, there’s time to slow down and recharge. Learn the art of fire-making, try your hand at frisbee golf and share stories as the long summer evenings stretch on. Keep your eyes peeled for reindeer between the trees and enjoy the peace and quiet of the Finnish wilderness.
Your week is built around a basecamp, with nights camping out in the wilderness on your trek and canoe journey. Finland’s everyman’s right means wild landscapes are open to all, as long as you respect nature and leave no trace.
Un sustainable development goal
Our school trips to Finland link to 4: Quality Education by providing students with hands-on learning experiences that build global awareness, resilience, and practical skills beyond the classroom.
