What is World Challenge?

What is a World Challenge Expedition?

You’ve probably heard the name at school, and you’re here to work out what we actually are.

World Challenge takes school groups on expeditions overseas. We’ve been doing it since 1987.

A World Challenge Expedition isn’t a school trip with a different name. You’ll trek, you’ll often work alongside a community or conservation partner, and your group runs the day-to-day.

It’s organised through your school, so you’d travel with students from your year, a teacher you know and a trained Expedition Leader who supports you throughout.

Where you’ll go and how long for

We run expeditions in more than 20 countries across five continents. Tanzania, Nepal, Borneo, Ecuador, Morocco, Vietnam, eSwatini and Costa Rica are some of the places groups travelled to last year.

Most expeditions run for 1 to 4 weeks, usually in the school holidays.

Who goes

More than 150,000 young people have now been on a World Challenge Expedition. Around 4,600 students travelled with us in 2025, from secondary schools in the UK and around the world. Most of the students who travel with us are aged 14 to 18.

You don’t need to be sporty or outdoorsy, and you don’t need any expedition experience. Plenty of students have never camped before, or been away from home for that long.

What happens before you go?

Quite a lot, and it starts months ahead. By the time you fly, you will have been preparing as a team for most of a school year.

You’ll train together, so you’re not meeting each other properly for the first time at the airport. You will get to know the people you’re travelling with before you go, so your group won’t be strangers.

You’ll also work through preparation together, covering what to expect and how to look after yourselves and each other, plus practical things like a kit list, which you get well in advance so you’re not buying boots the week before.

Many students raise some of the money towards their place too. If your school does it that way, we’ll give you ideas and support to get started, and it tends to become part of the expedition rather than something you get through first.

Who looks after you

World Challenge has been running school expeditions around the world since 1987. We are part of Experience Education, a group of school travel companies.

Your Expedition Leader runs the expedition and is with your group throughout. They’re trained in health, wellbeing and emergency response. They know when to step in and when to let your group work something out for themselves. At least one teacher from your school travels with you too.

Your Leader is backed by support teams who live and work in the country you’re visiting. A World Challenge Operations Centre is also available around the clock while you’re away, so your teacher and Leader can always call someone if anything comes up.

“A total once in a lifetime opportunity… to learn endless things about a phenomenal country and culture, but also endless amounts about yourself and how much you’re actually capable of.”
